EUCLID, Ohio (AP) ? Targeting middle-class voters, President Barack Obama on Monday unveiled a sweeping $25 million, nine-state ad campaign whose centerpiece is a commercial portraying him as the steward of an economic comeback and confronting Republican criticism that recovery has sputtered on his watch.

“We’re not there yet,” the ad says. “It’s still too hard, for too many. But we’re coming back. Because America’s greatness comes from a strong middle class. Because you don’t quit, and neither does he.”

Countering from hard-hit Ohio, Republican Mitt Romney argued that Obama’s policies are squeezing middle-income Americans and that his business background could help jumpstart the economy.

“The president and I have fairly different visions for what it’ll take to get America working again,” the former Massachusetts governor said.

The competing economic visions ? and the huge Obama investment in TV advertising in battleground states ? are shaping a White House race that new surveys suggest is competitive six months before Election Day. A poll of voters in a dozen swing states by USA Today and Gallup found Obama and Romney essentially even among registered voters ? Obama 47 percent, Romney 45 percent.

Just weeks old, the Obama-Romney race is playing out in a country in which unemployment is hovering around 8 percent and where many voters are not feeling growth that economists insist is occurring

Monday’s announcement of the new advertising effort came just days after Obama opened the latest phase in his White House re-election effort with a pair of rallies in politically important Virginia and Ohio.

The sheer scope of the ad effort ? $25 million in one month in the battlegrounds of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, Iowa, North Carolina, Florida and Colorado ? illustrates the huge advantage the incumbent Democrat has over Romney. Obama is tapping into a campaign bank account of more than $100 million to pay for his big opening salvo in the TV ad wars while Romney scurries to catch up after a costly and contentious primary season. The presumptive GOP nominee is relying on outside groups ? like the pro-Romney Restore Our Future political action committee ? to keep him competitive on the air against Obama’s behemoth campaign.

In the 60-second ad, Obama tries to paint a picture of a nation turning the page on a difficult decade.

The ad traces America’s economic landscape from late 2008 and the massive economic downturn that crippled the U.S. economy, with housing foreclosures, job losses and the financial crisis. “The economy spiraling down … all before this president took the oath,” it says. “Some said our best days were behind us. But not him.”

“He believed in us, fought for us,” the ad says as it highlights jobs being created, the killing of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the 2001 terrorist attacks, and the return of U.S. troops from a lengthy war in Iraq in Obama’s first term.

It could be considered Obama’s take on President Ronald Reagan’s patriotic “Morning in America” theme, yet with a gritty undertone. It juxtaposes images of unemployed workers and home foreclosure signs with workers assembling cars, a girl jumping into the arms of her soldier father and a woman working behind a cash register. But, despite the optimistic tone, the ad overlooks the challenges Obama faces in selling the message that the economy is improving.

Economic data released last week show his hurdles. The economy added just 115,000 jobs in April, far below monthly totals from December 2011 through February 2012 when the economy grew at a faster pace. While the unemployment rate inched down to 8.1 percent, the decline was largely attributed to more people who had stopped looking for work. People who are no longer looking for jobs are not counted as unemployed.

By emphasizing Obama’s record, the new ad showed that Obama’s advisers recognize he can’t win a second term simply by attacking Romney’s record in business and as Massachusetts governor. Instead, the ads are aimed at making a compelling case that despite the economic hardships faced by millions of Americans, Obama is the best overseer of the economy.

The advertising push includes large ad buys in multiple markets in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and Colorado, and will cover a number of 30-second and 60-second spots running into early June.

In a conference call with reporters, David Axelrod, a senior adviser to the Obama campaign, said the campaign would devote its May advertising to a positive message touting Obama’s accomplishments but was prepared to respond to criticism from “the Karl and Koch brothers’ contract killers over there in super PAC land.”

It was a reference to outside groups linked to Karl Rove, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, and the heads of Koch Industries, longtime supporters of conservative causes. Obama has responded to a handful of critical ads in recent months with his own defensive spots, and Axelrod criticized the GOP-leaning groups even though the White House has signaled to Democratic donors that they too should donate to Democratic-leaning super PACs.

While Obama let his campaign ad shape the race Monday, Romney headed to suburban Cleveland. He softened his tone at times, sharing the stories of struggling Americans he’s met on the campaign trail and countering the notion that he came from a privileged background. He said his father, a former auto executive, never had the time or money to get a college degree and his parents “couldn’t afford a fancy honeymoon” when they married.

During Romney’s town hall meeting, a woman said in a question to Romney that Obama had strayed from the principles of the Constitution and “should be tried for treason.” Romney did not respond to her suggestion of treason but told reporters later that “no, of course” the president should not be tried for such an offense.

On Tuesday he was heading to Michigan, the state where he grew up and has identified as a potential Republican pickup, and on Wednesday to Colorado, where Obama staged the 2008 Democratic National Convention and captured electoral votes a few months later. He was to visit the state capitals of Lansing and Denver.

Romney, the expected GOP nominee, was expected to add more delegates to his haul from Tuesday’s primaries in North Carolina, Indiana and West Virginia. He has 856 delegates, according to The Associated Press’ count, nearly 300 delegates short of the 1,144 needed to win the nomination.

Obama, for his part, was taking his economic message to events in Albany, N.Y., on Tuesday, and Reno, Nev., on Friday. He also was holding fundraisers later in the week in Seattle and Los Angeles, where he was attending a high-dollar dinner at the home of actor George Clooney.

Video: Power generation technology based on piezoelectric nanocomposite materials

    Monday, May 7, 2012

The team of Professor Keon Jae Lee from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, KAIST, has developed new forms of low cost, large-area nanogenerator technology using the piezoelectric ceramic nanoparticles.

Piezoelectric effects-based nanogenerator technology that converts existing sources of nonpolluting energies, such as vibrational and mechanical energy from the nature of wind and waves, into infinite electrical energy is drawing immense interest in the next-generation energy harvesting technology. However, previous nanogenerator technologies have limitations such as complicated process, high-cost, and size-related restrictions.

Recently, Professor Lee’s research team has developed a nanocomposite-based nanogenerator that successfully overcomes the critical restrictions existed in previous nanogenerators and builds a simple, low-cost, and large-scale self-powered energy system. The team produced a piezoelectric nanocomposite by mixing piezoelectric nanoparticles with carbon-based nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes and reduced graphene oxide) in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix and fabricated the nanocomposite generator by the simple process of spin-casting or bar-coating method.

Professor Zhong Lin Wang from Georgia Institute of Technology, who is the inventor of the nanogenerator, said,

“This exciting result first introduces a nanocomposite material into the self-powered energy system, and therefore it can expand the feasibility of nanogenerator in consumer electronics, ubiquitous sensor networks, and wearable clothes.”

  • Govt can’t use ’60 Minutes’ clip against Clemens

Barrett Prettyman United States Court House as his retrial continues on charges that Clemens committed perjury when he told Congress in 2008 that he had never taken steroids or human growth hormone, Thursday, May 3, 2012, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A short clip from Mike Wallace’s “60 Minutes” interview with Roger Clemens in 2008 provided just enough ambiguity for the judge to rule it out, hurting the government’s hopes of proving one piece of its case against the 11-time All-Star pitcher.

Lawyers for Clemens also laid down in writing their reasons to strike testimony from Andy Pettitte, while the jury on Monday heard federal agents discuss the handling of physical evidence and the trial entered its fourth week.

The crux of the trial focuses on whether Clemens lied to Congress when he said he had never used human growth hormone and steroids, but the government is also trying to prove numerous other alleged untruths from Clemens during a 2008 congressional hearing and the deposition that preceded it.

Among those other charges: That Clemens obstructed Congress when he said he “no idea” that former Sen. George Mitchell wanted to talk with him while putting together the landmark 2007 Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drug use in baseball. Clemens is named prominently in the report as having received steroids and HGH injections from his former strength coach, Brian McNamee.

Clemens said on “60 Minutes” that he didn’t speak to Mitchell’s investigators because his lawyer advised against it. Prosecutor Courtney Saleski said that contradicts what Clemens told Congress and that it’s “just unbelievable” that Clemens didn’t know of Mitchell’s request.

But U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said it was possible Clemens was told generally by lawyers not to talk to Mitchell, without actually informing the pitcher that Mitchell wanted to talk to him. The judge also cited the subtle difference between Mitchell’s “investigators” and Mitchell himself and then reiterated his overall concern that playing the clip could run afoul of Clemens’ attorney-client privilege. The judge ruled the clip couldn’t be played.

Meanwhile, the government is fighting against another potential setback regarding Pettitte, Clemens’ former teammate and longtime friend. Pettitte conceded on the stand last week that there is a 50-50 chance he misunderstood a conversation 12 years ago when he thought he heard Clemens admit to using HGH.

Clemens’ lawyers say that’s too tenuous. They want the judge to tell the jury to ignore Pettitte’s testimony about the conversation.

“The court should not allow the jury to consider an alleged ‘admission’ that has all the weight of a coin flip,” Clemens’ lawyers wrote in a filing.

The government is expected to respond with a filing of its own before the judge rules.

The two witnesses Monday were a pair of federal agents, Jeff Novitzky of the Food and Drug Administration and John Longmire of the FBI. Novitzky began investigating connections between drugs and sports as an agent with the Internal Revenue Service.

Both talked about the chain of custody of evidence ? needles, syringes, gauze and other items ? some of which McNamee says were used to inject Clemens with a steroid. Clemens’ lawyers focused on the condition of the evidence when it was handed over to authorities by McNamee, emphasizing a photo of the items bunched in a bag with a beer can rather than the photos of the items neatly arranged for classification once they were in the hands of the IRS and later the FBI.

FBI agent Longmire was asked by Clemens lawyer Michael Attanasio about keeping evidence in a beer can.

    “I would not,” Longmire said.

    Why not?

“That’s not what they trained us to do,” the FBI agent answered.

The government is expected to show that Clemens’ DNA was found among the items. Clemens’ lawyers claim the evidence was tainted and/or contaminated.

The start of court Monday marked Day 11 of a trial that was still on its third witness. Walton opened the proceedings by again expressing his concerns about the slow pace and said he might impose time limits if the lawyers persist in what he called “unnecessary questioning.”

The judge’s efforts didn’t bear much fruit. The morning session began late because of a misunderstanding over a juror’s prior obligation. Once it was under way, there were again numerous delays for bench conferences, including a 22-minute discussion between Walton and the lawyers over a set of questions posed to Novitzky by members of the jury.

The trial suffered another delay when the sound system in the courtroom malfunctioned, prompting the judge to call for a technician. The court also endured rudimentary sports questions asked to Longmire, such as: “For those of us who aren’t baseball fans, what is Yankee Stadium?” and “Is Sports Illustrated a magazine?”

The government also had to introduce an extra exhibit when Longmire had trouble recalling the timeline of events in the investigation.

“I’m not very good with dates,” the FBI agent said.

    American Gastroenterological Association

Bethesda, MD (May 7, 2012) The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute’s Procedural Sedation/Patient Safety Practice Improvement Module (PIM) has received approval from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) to be part of ABIM’s Approved Quality Improvement (AQI) Pathway. Internal medicine physicians, gastroenterologists and any internal medicine subspecialists using procedural sedation can engage in quality improvement through the AGA Procedural Sedation/Patient Safety PIM to earn maintenance of certification (MOC) practice performance credit.

The AGA Procedural Sedation/Patient Safety PIM is the first independently developed PIM in the field of gastroenterology to be approved by the ABIM for MOC points toward the self-evaluation of practice performance requirement.

AGA’s Procedural Sedation/Patient Safety PIM works as an online portal that guides physicians through a chart abstraction of de-identified patient data, compiling this information so as to help them identify patterns and select changes or interventions that should improve performance. Participating physicians will implement an improvement plan, followed by another chart extraction several months later. The PIM will generate a report comparing the two sets of charts, allowing physicians to easily assess the impact of their improvement plan and recognize opportunities for ongoing improvement in practice.

The sedation PIM focuses on practice based evaluation of the following five quality indicators:

    • Risk assessment.
    • Informed consent.
    • Depth of sedation.
    • Patient safety (managing medication).
    • Patient satisfaction.

To learn more, go to www.gastro.org/agapim1.

This activity is approved through the American Board of Internal Medicine’s-Approved Quality Improvement (AQI) Pathway and is eligible for 20 points towards the self-evaluation of practice performance requirement of maintenance of certification.

ABIM is an independent, not-for-profit organization that grants board certification a well accepted marker of physician quality to internists and subspecialists. Certification is a rigorous, comprehensive program for evaluating physician knowledge, skills and attitudes to assure both patients and payers that a physician has achieved competence for practice in a given field. ABIM requires that physicians periodically recertify through the ABIM’s MOC program.

“If physicians are already engaged in rigorous quality improvement activities through their hospital or another organization we want them to receive Maintenance of Certification credit for that activity,” said Elizabeth Blaylock, vice president of PIM development at the American Board of Internal Medicine. “The American Gastroenterological Association has built a program that supports physicians in their efforts to measure and improve patient care.”

  • How to Make the Most Out of Social Media Marketing | weicome to …

When you?re an Internet marketer, you need to understand how important social media really is. You have to accept that, these days, the true power of web marketing is in how well you can fold social media into the rest of your campaign.

It doesn?t actually matter which kind of service or product that you want to promote. The precise moment you start to work social media into the rest of your marketing efforts is the precise moment that you will see magic start to happen. You?ll be able to get your target audience to truly notice you. Your marketing efforts will get a lot more easier. And getting exposure becomes simple. This article is going to teach you a few things that you can use right now to get more out of your social media marketing.

If you want to leverage the power of Facebook and social media, you need to remain active on the site. If you want to use social media for marketing, you need to make connections and build relationships. If you are hoping to create momentum through your social media marketing, you need to be as active as humanly possible. This applies especially when you?re on a site like Facebook. If you don?t maintain a proper level of activity, your Facebook page will be dormant and it could potentially stay that way. You have to keep breathing life into it to make things happen. Otherwise your fans will forget who you are and unlike your page. One curious and true thought about using IM business tools or approaches is success will depend on the skill with which any person brings to the table.

You can rattle off any number of strategies used, Exit Plan Profits Bonus ? that is a randomly chosen tool many people like. Another very good point is the huge variation in results that can be observed across the board with a lot of methods.

Other issues complicate matters such as some people hate to be wrong or are afraid they are wrong, so they do not seek out the means to gain feedback. Your level of knowledge will give you the power to be in a better position to know the finer constituents of even the simplest landing page, for example.

All the greatest business people on the net who started small eventually realized how critical testing all those small parts are for getting the greatest conversions. Have you properly integrated the major social media sites (like Twitter) into your blog or website? If you haven?t then you don?t know what you?re missing out on. Even just a simple ?retweet? button can help you go really far. People who read and enjoy your content are always looking for ways to share that on Twitter. And as we all know, Twitter is one of the most popular social media hangouts. You should make sharing your content as simple as it can possibly be. See to it that you?ve done everything possible to increase the popularity of the content that you have composed. You can go quite a long way when you take these simple steps.

Are you a member of LinkedIn? If you said no, why? LinkedIn, just like Twitter and Facebook, has become one of the most important presences within the world of social media. Create an account on it and make sure that your profile is public. Lots of people forget this one important element. You need to make it as easy as possible for people to get in touch with you through LinkedIn. So see to it that you?re not at all ignoring LinkedIn when utilizing social media for marketing. Always think in terms of conversion rates as you learn anything new, and as usual we encourage you to learn much more than what is presented in this article. You probably know that a great many will overlook or ignore this encouragement, but all that matters is what you will do or are willing to do. A great many people are far too cynical and skeptical about online marketing methods and maybe even http://www.commissionscalpers.com ? we do not know. Yet, as individuals, we do have our preferences even if they can be based on what is not ideal, etc.

If you are impatient and fail to do your due diligence, then you are obviously taking certain risks with your time and possibly money. If you actually give what you buy a shot, then if you do not perform solid research is when you are pressing your luck. But you should not be afraid of anything that appears to be new to you because there are some products that are excellent. It can be frustrating for everybody, but for different reasons, because there are different situations and people can complain about a strategy that is actually good. That is a habit worth developing because at some point along the line it will serve you very well. To truly grow your social media presence, you need to have a plan for the direction in which you want to head. If you do not focus your effort on this one idea, everything else will fall apart. In order to get the most out of social media marketing, you have to give your online social network what it wants. You can?t just cap your social media marketing campaigns. You can?t limit them. In addition to understanding the direction in which you want to move, you need to make sure that you work consistently to get there. That?s it. Of course we all know that nothing is perfect or applicable for everyone, but for online marketing today?s discussion has far-reaching implications. There are a finite number of internet marketing methods, but each one has such a variety of applications that things begin to multiply very quickly. When you have a diverse set of marketing and advertising campaigns underway, all the time, then if you lose one for some reason the effect is not devastating. So do not allow that to happen to you, and we talk about expanding marketing efforts all the time for that reason. The fabled ?autopilot? internet business based on Social Commissions or anything else is a myth, number one, and it is also playing with fire for reasons we have just talked about. If you want to build a long-term business on the web, then you have to be the business person and maintain your dedication while you continue to prosper.

Though he?s been dead for nearly 34 years, Keith Moon received an invitation from the Olympics committee to attend the Summer Games in London along with his band, The Who, lead singer Roger Daltrey confirmed.

?It is true, and it could only happen in Britain. I mean, we are so organized,? Daltrey said when he appeared on ?Jimmy Kimmel Live!? on May 3. ?We got an email requesting, ?Can Keith Moon attend the opening ceremony?? And our manager sent an email back responding, ?Well, actually, he currently resides at Golders Green Crematorium where he?s been for the last 35 years, but maybe if you?ve got a round table, some letters and some glasses, you might be able to get him there.?

?Have a s?ance and bring him back?? Kimmel laughed.

    ?Yes!? Daltrey joked.

In April, The Sunday Times first reported that the band?s manager, Bill Curbishley, had been contacted by an official from the Olympics committee inquiring as to whether the late rocker ?would be available to play.?

The prolific drummer died in 1978 after accidentally overdosing on prescription medication he?d been taking to detoxify from heavy use of drugs and alcohol. He passed away at the age of 32, nearly 15?years after he first joined the rock band when he was 17 years old. He was cremated on Sept. 13, 1978, his ashes scattered over gardens at Golders Green, where a plaque in his honor now exists with the quote, ?There is no substitute.?

Moon was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 with The Who, and ranked by Rolling Stone readers in 2011 as the second greatest drummer of all time.

According to Daltrey, his former bandmate won?t be making a resurrection anytime soon. But Kimmel suggested there could be one viable option.

?Tupac came back,? the comedian pointed out, referencing the hologram at Coachella that had the world aflutter in April.

Kimmel also inquired about the current status of The Who, which now consists only of Daltrey and Pete Townsend after their fourth member, bass player John Entwistle, died in 2002 from a cocaine-induced heart attack one day before the band?s 2002 US tour.

Commented Daltrey, ?We?re kind of having a very long sabbatical, which seems to be like most of our career.?
